The idea for Conscious Chocolate came from a diet of raw, living food that detoxes and cleanses. On a pure diet the body gets really sensitive to healing, healthy food, making you feel better and brighter than ever. Tasting raw cacao in this framework was an amazing experience. This is really how the chocolate sensation evolved. Friends were bringing cacao beans back from Mexico and David Wolf's company "Natures First Law" in San Diego. The effects of raw chocolate were immediately obvious and tasted wonderful. So being food lovers, and experimenters, new ways of eating raw cacao were put in to immediate effect.
Hours were spent making truffles, dehydrated biscuits, cookies and cakes and developing a sauce to pour over or dip them into. Selling these raw delights at the Big Green Gathering in 2005, we discovered that people really loved the raw chocolate sauce and would keep coming back to dip the truffles again and again!
It became obvious that the sauce was the way forward - a 40 gm bar. Over time we have developed a range of exciting, mouth watering and healthful flavours.
Emma is our chocalatier. She is an Iyengar yoga teacher living in Kent. Having always been interested in health, body consciousness and healthy eating, raw chocolate was an inspiration for her. Emma was a chef at a busy and thriving vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Bath in the 1990's.
Emma has been taking her products to markets for many years, and loves taking her chocolate to markets in London, Steiner Schools and festivals where people taste the chocolate, in order to provide ongoing feedback and inspiration.
Conscious Chocolate was formed in 2006, and began producing chocolate for sale to health food stores and individuals on a small scale. However, demand for the delicious flavours and health-giving superfoods quickly grew, and by the beginning of 2008 over 50 different outlets are stocking our chocolate around the UK.
